My name’s a bit of a giveaway when it comes to guessing my profession. I am the Head Groundsman at ten times English champions, Leicester Tigers Rugby Club.
Before coming to the Tigers, my career had seen me work on the grounds at Leicester City Football Club and at England FA’s St George’s Park in Burton-upon-Trent. Tigers’ famous Welford Road stadium regularly houses 20,000 plus fans roaring on their team with its pitch often bearing the brunt of a busy and bruising rugby season. But my team also look after the seating and terracing areas at the ground, all the surrounding car parks and public access ways, and when you add the training pitches and facilities at Oval Park, too, you start to get a feel for the mammoth task we face on a daily basis.
Luckily, Tigers’ official partner, STIHL, has a multitude of equipment ideal for the task at hand. Tools that really help the team and I maintain the high standards required of today’s professional sports facilities.
STIHL is one of the biggest names in the game for maintenance and power equipment, so having access to high-end machinery and resources ensures Welford Road and the training grounds at Oval Park continue to provide some of the best facilities in the country.
The stadium and the club’s three training pitches at Oval Park take their fair share of damage from both rugby and the weather. In any one season, we can accommodate over 200 matches and daily training sessions, so having kit that is reliable, ergonomic and capable of delivering a superb finish makes all the difference. We use STIHL grass trimmers, blowers and small pedestrian rotary mowers, as well as hard-wearing outdoor clothing like boots, jackets and gloves, enabling us to get the job done, whatever the weather.
The club’s partnership with STIHL means we always have the machinery we need to work effectively and efficiently.
