FOR COMFORTABLE TRANSPORT AND STORAGE. Thanks to the detachable shaft, you can quickly dismantle your power tool for easier transport, and also store it in a space-saving manner. You do not need any tools to disassemble the shaft.
EASY-TO-ADJUST SHAFT LENGTH. The square telescopic shaft is equipped with a twist-secured clamping sleeve. This enables quick and tool-free adjustment of the shaft length (may vary in overall length for different power tools). This means that you can quickly and efficiently adapt the tool being used to the respective work situation.
DIRECT POWER SUPPLY TO THE POWER TOOL. With this power tool, you can insert the required battery from the STIHL AP-System directly into the engine housing. This increases your mobility and flexibility when working.
REDUCES WORKING FATIGUE. Thanks to the battery’s optimal centre of gravity, this power tool has a low tilting torque which supports fatigue-free working.
FOR GOOD PLANNABILITY. At the push of a button, the LED charge-level indicator will inform you at any time about your battery’s remaining capacity. This allows you to efficiently plan working hours and charge the battery in good time.
POWERFUL CUTS AND LOW VIBRATION. The double-stroke blade gives a precise cutting pattern on your hedge. The two overlapping blades are laser-cut and diamond-ground. They are very powerful and durable. The counter-rotating blade ensures extremely low vibration and smooth running, making it easier to maintain a straight cutting line.
FOR OPTIMAL HEDGE CUTTING. The double-sided cutting blade facilitates optimum hedge cutting: vertically, horizontally and in corners. Thanks to the double-sided cutting blades, you can effectively trim or prune your hedge – even those thicker branches.
ENABLES COMFORTABLE AND EFFECTIVE WORK. You can work flexibly and comfortably with the rapid adjustment system of your long-reach hedge trimmer. The cutter bar can be adjusted to different angles depending on the application. For safe and compact transport, fold the cutter bar parallel to the shaft until it engages automatically.

Please note that this model is available as a tool only. If you don't already own a compatible battery and charger, you will need to buy these separately. You will need STIHL AS 2 battery and an ALS 31 charger for use with the HLA 40.
Compact and lightweight, the HLA 40 long-reach hedge trimmer is the first of its kind in the AS System, and is ideal for cutting taller hedges, shrubs and bushes in your garden.
It’s powered by an interchangeable AS 2 lithium-ion battery, which can be used in other STIHL AS System tools, such as the cordless garden pruners, leaf blower, grass trimmer, powered secateurs and more.
The HLA 40 has a telescopic shaft and adjustable cutter bar, making it versatile for a range of trimming tasks. It has a length of 2.6 metres, making it perfect for cutting tall hedges from the ground. The long-reach hedge trimmer is incredibly lightweight, weighing 3.7 kg, and is comfortable to use thanks to the soft-grip handle. The tool-free telescopic shaft is easy to adjust to your desired height, and the shoulder strap clips on quickly for added comfort when working on longer jobs.
The laser-cut, diamond-ground, and hardened blades offer excellent cutting performance. With tool-free blade angle adjustment, you can set the cutter bar to 3 different angles, from minus 45° degrees to plus 70° degrees – allowing you to easily tackle the sides and tops of hedges. A tip protector shields the blades when working close to the ground or against walls.
For transport and storage, the hedge trimmer can be split which reduces the overall length of the hedge trimmer from 260 to 115 cm, making it easy to carry and store away in your garage or shed. The HLA 40 has a 45 cm cutter bar, helping you work efficiently and get the job done quickly, to a high standard.
Cannot be used with Kombi attachments, HTA 30 pruner head, RTS harness or shaft extension.
Working time with AS 2 battery is up to 40 minutes.
