Vital seasonal care

Summer

Water the roots on a regular basis, this means no more than twice a week. This means no more than twice a week. It is actually preferable to water the lawn intensively only once a week (approx. 20 litres per m²). Watering more frequently is likely to "spoil" any lawn.

Either mulch mow the lawn continuously, or perform summer fertilisation. If you mulch or fertilise with a VIKING Multi-Mower™, you save having to fertilise during the summer.

During hot spells, allow the grass to grow longer (approx. 5 cm) and mow it during dull weather. Mow high "holiday lawns" in several stages, first at the highest cutting position, then at a slightly lower one. Dig out undesirable weeds from the lawn, repair damaged areas and resow any bare patches in the late summer so that the grass is able to take hold during the warm autumn days.

Autumn

Water the roots on a regular basis. Autumn fertilisation can be dispensed with if you use a mulching mower. Mow the lawn for the last time as late as possible before the winter break, particularly if mild weather persists.

Cut the grass to a length of 3-5 cm for the winter break. Dig out persistent weeds, test the soil for lime, phosphor or potassium. Plant crocus, hyacinth and tulip bulbs in groups to provide a splash of colour in the spring. Remove autumn leaves before the winter, ideally using a VIKING lawn mower with a vacuum leaf collecting function.

Winter

The tank should be emptied before the winter break because residual fuel loses its combustibility during the winter. If it remains in the tank, it can cause problems with starting the machine in the spring.

It may be necessary to perform an oil change or to obtain support from a VIKING specialist dealer for this purpose. Furthermore, it is important to follow the instruction manual and to use the recommended brand name of oil.

The appliance must be thoroughly cleaned using a brush and water, especially after the last mowing operation. Cleaning with a garden hose is also helpful.

Caution: The water jet directed at bearings, seals or engine components must not be too powerful, as this may damage the appliance. In order to clean dirt from the underside of the housing, the lawn mower should be tilted backwards so that the spark plug points upwards. If the appliance is tilted to the side, oil may enter the air filter or the exhaust – there is a danger of severe damage.

When all maintenance work is completed, the lawn mower must be adequately covered and stored in a dust-free, dry room. The storage position is the normal position.

Warning: It is essential that lawn mowers with starter batteries are stored under frost-free conditions. Even if the appliance is temporarily out of operation, it must at no time be accessible to children.

Spring

During the winter months, leaves die off and the wind blows leaves and foliage from trees and bushes onto the lawn. The lawn may have also experienced snowfall and may have an unpleasant, grey/brown appearance.

Clear the lawn using a fine rake, a vacuum leaf collector or a suitable VIKING lawn mower. Once the ground has dried, has warmed up (+10 °C) and growth has resumed, bare patches in the lawn can be resown.

Spring fertilisation helps the lawn to quickly grow strong and green again, if no nutrient reserves were provided during the previous year through continuous mulching.

From around mid April, dead material can be removed using a lawn scarifier, which also aerates and loosens up the turf. Only mow islands of flowers or desirable patches of wildflowers after they have bloomed, in order to allow them to seed. Do not fertilise these particular areas in order to ensure that the flowers blossom again the following year.
